Project Updates On Wednesday, July 20th, 2022 the Steering Committee met to review the Draft Design Guidelines for the Commercial District, located along Grand Avenue and 1st Street. The guidelines were unanimously recommended, as presented. The Railroad Avenue (RA-2) District was also re-opened for discussion and a motion made to reduce the height maximum from 3-stories to 2-stories in RA-2, which passed with a vote of 7 yes, 5 no, and 2 abstained. Next steps are to prepare the Design Guidelines for presentation to Plan Commission and Council, which is anticipated to take place this Fall of 2022. Questions + Answers Council Adopts Design Guidelines for 5th Street Unanimous recommendation by City Council: Pages 1-40 of the Historic West Des Moines Design Guidelines were adopted by City Council on February 21st, 2022 with a vote of 5-yes, 0-no. This section focuses on Architectural and Streetscape Guidelines for the Mixed Use Commercial District centered on 5th Street in Valley Junction. Council also passed the 6-month demolition moratorium for buildings in the Valley Junction Mixed Use District, except for 111 and 113 5th Street.
